Design Philosophy

Sanctuary Landscape Design approaches design as a truly collaborative process between the client and the Designer. We hold the client’s vision in the highest regard, in terms of aesthetic as well as budget. One of the first steps in our design process is to explore the needs, desires, preferences and unique vision for each space. We encourage the client to be involved to whatever extent they desire throughout both the design and installation process. For Sanctuary Landscape Design, each client and each site is an opportunity to create a genuinely unique and personal landscape.

Every project is evaluated for both its particular opportunities and limitations. Sanctuary Landscape Design looks for ways to turn what may initially be viewed as limitations into opportunities for a more unique and special landscape. An unusually narrow plot may become an opportunity for an intimate space. A hillside site may become an opportunity to create a series of interesting terraces. A drainage issue may become an opportunity for a dry river bed or water feature

We believe that a landscape should not only be functional and aesthetically pleasing, but should also be transformational. Sanctuary Landscape Designs are landscapes of renewal and inspiration. A major source of inspiration for this process is the work of Joseph Campbell who explored how myth and symbolism can be understood as metaphors providing great insight for our own life journeys. Sanctuary Landscape Design draws from Campbell’s work to create landscapes embedded with symbolism and meaning that resonate deeply with every individual. (Watch Video)
